Hewett Sports Ground will finally receive a much needed upgrade following the Turnbull Coalition Government’s commitment today of $400,000 to redevelop the Hewett Reserve clubrooms.
Liberal candidate for Boothby, Nicolle Flint has welcomed this exciting news as a win for the local community, especially the many volunteers, parents and players, who have long fought for improved facilities.
“I’ve always been a strong supporter of grass roots sports, and I hope this upgrade encourages more players to sign up and compete locally. This funding will not only improve the facilities for tennis and cricket, but also netball which is a sport close to my heart.
“Netball remains far and away the most popular sport for women over the age of 15. But there’s still more to do, which is why I am working to promote the Coalition’s #girlsmakeyourmove campaign, to encourage young women aged 12-19 to undertake or continue sport.
The City of Mitcham pledged $400,850 in the 2015/16 Budget to this project, but was forced to put the upgrade on hold following the State Labor Government’s refusal to match the Council’s contribution.
“I am pleased that the Turnbull Coalition Government will join with Mitcham Council to deliver this new, multi-use sports hub, to meet the current and future needs of the area and support our local community” said Ms Flint.
Minister for Health and Sport, Sussan Ley said the Coalition was keen to ensure younger have Australians every opportunity to be active and play sport, building important skills for life.
